5 Tips for Winter!

Lots of us start to think about new beginnings during the winter months, possibly thinking about getting fitter and doing more exercise.  Unfortunately this is a time when our bodies are the most resistant to change. During winter we naturally want to hibernate more, conserving our energy and preserving our body fat.  Any exercise started during these cold months is more likely to result in injury.  This doesn't mean that we can't do anything but that we really need to listen to our bodies more and introduce any changes with a little consideration.  Here are some ways that you can help remain fit and well and encourage your body to work for you, rather than against you!

  1. Drink plenty of water
No surprises there!  During the winter months it is very cold and especially drying (you may notice your lips getting pretty dry).  Good water intact is a must to combat the drying atmosphere and help keep your body lubricated and supple.

  2. Keep your exercises to the middle of the day
This might sound obvious but exercising during the warmest part of the day can make life so much easier.  Having got your body moving around during the morning a brisk midday walk can be extremely beneficial and prevent causing injury during the cold mornings and evening.

  3. Warm up
Start your exercise with a short 10 minute warm up indoors, either jogging on he spot or jumping.  That way when you do go outside you will already be warm and won't feel the cold as much.

  4. Wrap up
Making sure you have plenty of layers on that you can remove or add to as required is a must! When you start your exercise you will likely need far more on than when you finish.  Think clearly about what layers you have on and how you will be able to remove any as you go (i.e. tying your jacket around your waist or pockets for your gloves).

  5. Good Footware
This is an absolute most!  Not only does your footware keep your feet warm and dry but it also helps to stop you from falling on any slippery surfaces.  Check your current footware and make sure you have enough grip.

But most of all enjoy it.  Exercising outdoors in the winter can be truly wonderful, with the fresh crisp air and beautifully clear days.  Get out there and enjoy it!
